Megan's adventures in crafting began at the age of seven, and just grew and grew. She went on to study theater at Temple University in Philadelphia and began a career as a costume designer, and freelance seamstress. She even won a grand in 2000, the Leeway Foundation's Window of Opportunity, to study costume design and beading techniques under Master Artist, Chamroeun Yin. After a couple of years, she left to go into nonprofit and hasn't looked back. Virus loves her for that. She did an email interview with us in May. 1. So who is the Philadelphia Sewing Collective? PSC is an all-volunteer group of professional and hobbyist seamstresses, designers, and crafters who are dedicated to promoting sewing and needlecrafts to the people of Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. We offer our members networking opportunities, teaching and volunteer opportunities, professional development and most importantly a community where our work is valued and supported. 2. Can you describe what the general make-up of the collective is? [I guess I mean that I know the collective is open to everyone, I’m just curious who comes out] PSC is a very diverse group. It was very important to me when I began PSC to not alienate anyone. We have 40+ members (men and women) who range in age from early 20s to mid-60’s. 3. Tell me about the classes/workshops you’ve got going on right now. We have a number of classes going on for late spring early summer. We have a Knitting with Wire class, a Make a Summer Tote bag class and an Alterations II class. We just started our classes in April and we are hoping to run at least two per month. 4. Any notable past classes/workshops you’d like to talk about? Yes, we have a Marketing for Independent Fashion and Craft Businesses that we are very excited about. The instructor is a member who started her own line of bags and wants to share her knowledge and experience with others. 5. Tell me some great things about Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a tough, little town. For years, we have had a little brother complex with NYC, always trying to keep up but not quite making it. However, in the last six years, we've had some very extensive re-development in several areas of the city. This has brought many new people to our city and tons of arts groups have formed because of this growth. There's a great music scene as well. Philly is definitely finding it's own niche! Philadelphia was a leading textile manufacturing city up until the middle of the 20th Century. We have five universities in the area that have excellent fashion and textile design programs. Philly may not return to its former manufacturing status but we are hoping to become renowned for our designers and boutiques. |
