  • Based in Southampton, Hampshire in the UK, one of the things that is so awesome about Russ Substance is the way he makes each piece he's written seem effortless, both in creation and execution. The first track I listened to was a live recording of Write it Down, you can honestly feel the fun in the recording. That can't be said for many acts. The next track I listened to, English Town, has a much different tone than Write it Down, in that it is a little slower and his voice is a little sadder, but it still has the same positive overall feel and vibe of what I'm understanding to be Russ Substance, sort of an acoustic and folky sound, in the best possible way. Kings and Queens is similar to English Town in terms of speed and voice, and yet while City Centre Song isn't exactly a fast song, the general tone of it would be best placed in the same category of Write it Down. Please, don't take my word for it, listen yourself and decide.

And something he's written jumps out at me too. Last summer he went on tour as part of a band he's in (Gordon Gano's) and also as a solo artist as well, he says that many of his dreams were fulfilled on that tour and instead of falling into that whole 'I've accomplished what I wanted to accomplish, now what?!?' thing, he simply says that he's decided to make some new dreams for himself to work on.

Valiant Death is set to release Russ Substance's new disc, The Safest Place to Hide a Book.
