Flashback to the 1990s - Stop the Insanity The other night I was flipping channels during one of my insomnia sessions. I do the channel flipping thing a lot as there never seems to be anything decent on the tube any longer and I swear there must be a twenty-four hour Jerry Springer channel because it seemed he was on for hours and on every other channel. There are days were I contemplate cancelling my cable but for unknown reasons I never do. I guess in short I use it as an aid to lull me to sleepy land. I flipped and flipped and flipped some more, but, rather then get sleepy from the boredom I was become frustrated by the fact that I spend so much money on cable and there was nothing on. Then I suddenly stopped flipping. Something or rather someone caught my attention. It took me a few minutes to realize I had dosed off and fallen into an early 1990's nightmare where I was dressed in a neon sweatshirt, matching neon socks and black tights. I pinched myself and then sat shocked, confused and then amused. There in front of me, on the tube was Susan Powter. Who here remembers Susan Powter and her 'Stop The Insanity' infomercials. If you do raise your hand. Come on, you in the back there, I know you watched this commercial for hours on end and I am not embarrassed to admit I did. How could I not, she was one of the most bizarre women I have seen since Phyllis Diller. She was outrageous, outspoken and had the energy of a titanium bomb about to go off. Not to mention she lost a tonne of weight and has kept it off. She had market niche product that made millions and made her a household name for several years. Then she seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth or so I assumed. Of course one should never assume. Seeing Susan did a few things for me that evening, she had me flashing back to being an awkward teenager of the ninties and once again gave me inspiration and hope. The Susan Powter of 2006 is successful, recognized and fucking hot!!!! Yes, HOT! She is almost fifty and looks like she is thirty-five. Holy hot mama! Then of course there are the book deals, TV spots, videos, guest appearances, and seminars. This woman hasn't stopped and I don't think she knows how to. She may have disappeared from infomercials but she didn't vanish from the world of weight loss and outspoken opinion. She cleverly waited for the right time to resurface and when she did she did with the flash we knew from her time of 'Stop The Insanity'. She is a survivor of the tidal wave of infomercials of the 1990's and is still going strong with no end in sight. For the next sixty minutes I was in awe, watching this woman talking about where she came from, where she was today and what she wanted to do for her future, then the moment quickly passed, the next show was an infomercial with Richard Simmons. |
