Lucerin Blue
Words: Nikki  -  Images: Lucerin Blue

A couple weeks ago, I was talking to my friend, and he kept asking if I 'remember' the band Lucerin Blue. Now, anyone that knows me even a little bit, knows that I'm horrible at remembering things, and this was no exception. But for the sake of not wanting to hear him talk even longer than he already was, I just said "Yes, of course I do...how could I forget?!" Later, when I returned home I went online and did a search (Google is one of my best friends) and I recognized the music, (and liked it, for that matter) but didn't know where from. So, I got in touch with the band and thus this article. Fortunately, after a few weeks I do remember where I first heard them, I saw them live. And then I was reminded of how odd I can be while first meeting someone, I just hope they don't remember that. But I will say this: it involved emus, owls, and my
little ponies. Hrm, right so let's talk about the actual band now...yes let's because there's two of me.

Now, because life has recently got in the way, big time, of me doing work on the zine. Instead of actually writing a full article, I'll be writing a half one. Yes, I think I just made that up.

Lucerin Blue formed in 1997, then they were known as "Natural Saint". 1997 and 2004 are very different times, mesh hats weren't cool, pogs were going out of style, and I think "Crazy Bones" were the newest fad. All that stuff is completely irrelevant to the band, unless of course they had disputes over who had the cooler crazy bones, then to form an alliance..then break the whole thing over a game of pogs, all the while wearing mesh hats. I should probably stop doing more than one thing at once, or else all of my articles will involve stuff like this. Ahem, within the timespan of three years "Natural Saint" transformed into "Lucerin Blue" Nathan joined, and that was followed by a deal with Tooth & Nail records. The former bass player left recently (March 2004) and was replaced by today's bassist Brad. As of right now, the lineup is:
Justin (Vocals) - He's a great song writer... he write the majority of the music including the guitar parts.
Nathan (Guitar/Piano/BGV) - He's been doing alot of colaborating with Justin in the writing process lately.  He's been trained in music and has a great ear for the little things that add alot in our songs. (Okay, when I first read "ear" I thought it said cat for like 10 minutes. >.<)
Ryan (drums) - He's an incredible drummer.... you should be if you practice as much as he does!!
Brad (bass/BGV) - "The New Guy" has quickly turned into the business man of the band.... Finances are his game

Last time I spoke with them, they were heading into the studio, where they're currently recording..obviously. They hope to have the CD dropped sometime in the spring. If I were you, which I'm not, I would pick it up. The ranges of the songs are different now, they go from catchy songs, to ones you probably wouldn't hear your mother singing along to, or at least not my mother...and she likes to sing when she's tired. It's kind of funny, but once she starts singing along to some of my music (which she clearly doesn't know the words to) it's kind of scary.

Now, because I'm quite fascinated on where people get names from, I, of course, had to ask where they got the name "Lucerin Blue" to which I got, this response, "It's from 'Lucerne Blue' which is a colour of the 1971 Trans Am...Justin's idea" After reading that, I sat there and laughed for quite some time, and no it isn't really funny because of the car but more because "..and I'm not easily impressed...WOW! A blue car!" Because it was Justin's idea, he totally gets a sticker and a lollipop for that one.

When I asked what they do when they aren't doing anything band related, I got, "Justin works as a roofer. nathan is a Chimney Sweep. Ryan builds Roof Trusses. brad is a painter..we figure if we ever need to, we could build our own homes..Lucerin Blue Contracting maybe?" If they somehow played while building a house, I'd get them to make my home. And then they could go on a house building tour. That would actually be pretty cool. In fact, if I could build stuff without horribly runining the entire design, I would do that. Okay, probably not. I'd probably just sit around and think about it for a while, and then make lists about it.

To make them even better, these crazy kids are Canadian too. Yes, kids..I'm not technically old enough to be calling them kids, but I'll say it anyway. But what's kind of funny about it, is that they've had more success in the states than in Canada. Most of the time it happens the other way 'round. "It's funny how all of us are from the general Greater Toronto Area but the radio doesn't play our stuff (although they DO have it) but radio stations all over the states have played us..and in some places..overplayed us." Sometimes when I listen to the radio here, at like 3AM..I'll hear someone talking about them, but won't actually play the song, which I found to be quite annoying after a while. Well, the good thing is they've done something that is very difficult for most Canadian bands; get noticed in the American market. And they did that without even being noticed in the Canadian one, so in a way, they're all like batman..somehow.

Hopefully my sorry attempt at a 'half article' doesn't piss the band off. >.<
