SISU #2

Put together in March 2004, I can't wait to get my hands on the far more recently released #3. This issue deals with name privilege, & while she does note that this theory has many exceptions (like Maytina, for example) she talks about the difference a name makes. She talks about the books she read as a child & the very white names of the characters in them. It's a very interesting piece. Also in this issue, an analytical piece on TLC programming & how it relates to race, or more specifically, culture. Another really interesting piece, this one on Miss Saigon, & how it has helped change her self-image (positively, even!). Johanna writes openly & honestly about being half Finnish & half Filipina, & how people react to her overall appearance & what that means to her. She talks also about food, & how culturally, she is faced with situations where she feels she is not Finnish ‘enough’ or not Filipina ‘enough’. There is also a really good piece on being a vegetarian that’s also giving up dairy & how she is making an effort to stand up for her choices when faced with questions about it. The review is long because the zine is great. Can’t help it. (Maytina)
